Who we are

We are the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mother of God, founded in Veghel, Netherlands on June 24, 1844.  The Congregation was co-founded by Pastor Bernardinus van Miert and his niece, Sister Teresia van Miert.  From the start their unique aim was the care of the needy in whom they recognized the suffering Jesus.

Sister Teresia van Miert was deeply moved by the needs of the times in which she lived.  Steeped in the Gospel and in the life of St. Francis, she discovered ways to alleviate the sufferings of the people in her surroundings.

According to the tradition of the Congregation, the Sisters will give special attention to the underprivileged sectors of society.

Where we are

From the Netherlands, the Congregation expanded its mission boundaries in 1906 to Indonesia and in 1929 to the Philippines.

In 1987, the Thailand Mission was established to promote dialogue of life with our Buddhist sisters and brothers.  To respond to the needs of migrant workers, the mission in Japan was founded in 1989.  The African mission was established in Kenya in 1993 as a shared global concern. In 2009, the mission in Kamloops, Canada was opened.

In the Philippines, you can find us in Luzon in the provinces of Benguet, Bataan, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan and Zambales.  The SFIC Provincial House is located in New Manila, Quezon City and the Formation Center is in Marikina.

How we are

We acknowledge that all good belongs to the most high Lord.  We try to live in a spirit of SIMPLICITY, SUBMISSION, LOVE and PENANCE.  We also strive for humility, patience and true peace.

Living the Gospel demands of us service and acceptance of the human existence with all its limitations.  We follow the way of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Francis of Assisi by bearing Christ in our hearts and bodies, bringing Him to birth through our life and example.

The Eucharist, prayer and contemplation are integral to our daily life.

We live in community (a religious house of the Congregation) where we find the freedom and space, security and strength, inspiration and support to follow Jesus Christ and together strive to be witnesses to God’s presence among our people.

What we do

We are engaged in education work from the pre-elementary level up to graduate school.  We have special programs for lepers, tubercular patients and the differently abled.  We manage retreat centers and dormitories and provide spiritual-moral development for the interns.

We are in Pastoral Work which includes Catechesis, Value Formation, Worship (Liturgy and Music), Formation of Lay Leaders/Youth, organization of Basic Ecclesial/Human Communities, Family Life apostolate and Corporal Works of Mercy.

We work with sectoral groups of women, youth, children, indigenous peoples, urban poor, migrant workers and refugees helping to organize them, doing consciousness-raising and facilitating welfare and development programs for them.

We are involved in justice, peace and integrity of creation work to build peace, to advocate human rights and to promote solidarity among peoples.

We are in dialogue of life with the Buddhist sisters and brothers in Thailand.

Whom we serve

Our Sisters are called to service in the Kingdom of God.  It is our first task to witness to the hope which lives in us, that God’s creation will reach its fulfillment.

Our preference is the poor and the needy so that these people will experience our solidarity with them.  We will work with the Church hierarchy and with other communities on religious inter-faith and social levels which are committed to human welfare and the proclamation of the Reign of God.
